FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 5, 2011

Bowl Away CF benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

[Cary,NC] — On Saturday, November 12, 2011, Bowl Away CF hosted its inaugural event at Buffaloe Lanes – Cary, successfully raising over $23,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The funds will be used to help make advances in cystic fibrosis research and care.

The idea for Bowl Away CF first came about in 2010, when the founder was the victim of a hit-and-run incident. “It left me with a long list of fractures and injuries, including post-concussion syndrome, which lingered for a year,” saidRay Petrino. “During the recovery process, I made a vow to give back if I ever made it all the way back. Early in 2011, I met with my business partner, Matt Illuzzi, and he generously agreed to cover half the cost of the lanes, so that every dollar raised could go directly to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. My good friend and law professor from Notre Dame, Margot O’Brien-Cleveland, devotes most of each day to caring for her two year-old, Bobby, who is seriously afflicted by the worst form of the disease, and our mutual friend, Kristy, is on a waiting list, anxiously hoping to receive a double-lung transplant she needs in order to survive. This disease affects us personally, so we’ve tried to do everything we can to make a difference.”

Fifty years ago, most children with CF did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, the median predicted age of survival is 37.4 years old. The longer life expectancy has been made possible by the contributions of the CF Foundation, highlighted by an investment of approximately $75 million in Vertex, a company developing a ground-breaking drug known as VX-770.

“We’re proud to lend our support to an organization making great strides in finding a cure for a terrible disease”, added Matt Illuzzi. “Based on the feedback from this year’s participants, we’re looking forward to making Bowl Away CF an annual tradition, with bowling, live DJ music, prizes, and amazing food from our generous sponsors, all part of the event.”

Based on outstanding pledges from participants and donors, Ray and Matt believe that donations will ultimately exceed $25,000 for 2011. To make a donation, please visit bowlawaycf.com or e-mail Ray and Matt at bowlawaycf@gmail.com for more information on how to help such a worthy cause.

About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation

The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening genetic disease that affects 30,000 adults and children in the United States and 70,000 people worldwide. It causes debilitating lung infections that lead to premature death. More than 10 million Americans are symptomless carriers of the CF gene.
